Tracklist

  • 1. Beggars Outside the Gates of Heaven (02:45)
     copy
Watching the ocean rise in the sky
It glares back at me - paralyzed
I lock eyes with a helpless whale
    Up in the clouds

I’ve never felt so close to the sun
    Its embrace scorches me
    Huddle into your family
    Close your eyes and wait

Money can’t save them when they get what they bargained for

They will die like the rest of us
    Greed swallows them whole

Bills burn as fast as hair
  • 2. Weightless Amongst Perished Stars (05:34)
     copy
When I Look into the mirror
I see a desert in my face

How many dozens of times have I watched the earth dance around the sun

    God or a void
    Wait for me

    Tree branches
    Wrapped in flesh
    Dried out

Lay and wait for the still, pale cold

What once carried desire has now rusted - corroded

To trudge on as a frail husk of what once was yields no reward

I have a wasp’s nest encased in my skull
I’ll crack my head in the brick
    And relieve the incessant buzzing
    I dry heave hundreds
They carry me to the sky

I am ready to be freed
I long to flail in the black
I am ready to be freed
  • 3. Crowned Sloth (04:23)
     copy
    Carrying promises from an idol
Crushing shoulders on the way to the throne
Whisper sweet lies to the vulnerable
Pull the meat away - throw the bones to the hounds

Peasants shovel waste from the grand feast
Prepared by slaves draped in gold

    Crowned sloth

    Spoon-fed by the lepers
The chalice reflects in their eyes
So they can feed their children from the trough

    Behind closed doors I slither
    Swallow your family whole
Stand on the backs of the starving
Take the gold from the sun
Feed on the crumbs that fall from my bib
My rotting food is mine alone

    Let them eat cake
    Feast on his head
  • 4. Crushed Petals of Innocence (04:01)
     copy
A black widow weaves a web of diamonds

    Dangling the golden carrot
Gnawed on alive - they all love it
As long as they shine in the night

Let them pluck out your eyes
And wear them in their skulls
So you can watch yourself play god on a throne of children’s bones

carve the riches out from their chests
Their blood is just your currency

When beheaded, the snakes pour out
  • 5. Jericho's Trumpet Leads the Symphony of Angels (07:43)
     copy
When I stare into the burning eyes of god, they will freeze

Every child born into a war torn hellscape

    When their limbs become debris
    When their mothers are shrieking
Will you tell me they have sinned?
That they never stood a chance?

When I smash the lock to heaven’s gates
Who will I see when I push them open?
    They’ll be up there laughing
    As tears fill the ocean

The men who carry the keys out of reach
The men with the diamonds in their eyes
The men who hold your hand until it turns blue
Will I see them with little wings on their backs?

    Job was so naive
No matter what he did, they would have dropped like flies - for an ego

The serpent whispered in your ear
You bite the apple - You chew the flesh
Watching the flames of burning eden
    light up the sky

When they try to hide what they’ve done
You still see the faces beneath the tar
He carried the cross and wore the thorns
So you can bring your gun into the booth

    Jericho’s trumpet deafens all

Shake the bloody hand of Christ
For letting the light shine down
    On your napalm playground
Their skeletons glisten in the moonlight

There is no limit to man’s malice
The extent of horrors in this world
How could hell be any worse?

When angels look down on the earth
    They’ll cut their throats
  • Duration: 24:26

More info

“His Crowned Skull Raised to the Sun” is an album where the ocean rises to meet the heavens, and the scorching sun draws unbearably close. It's a world where money offers no salvation, and greed devours everything - burning through cash as quickly as it does hair. A glance in the mirror may reveal a desert within, and the skull becomes a hive for wasps whose buzzing you long to escape.

The music asks questions about the heavens - questions posed to those who keep the keys to paradise out of reach. While tears swell the ocean, angels gaze down at the earth, ready to make a desperate move.

Apple of Basilisk is a band from Toronto, Ontario, formed by musicians rooted in the local hardcore scene. Their origin story is as unique as their sound: “Liam (vocals) and Peter (guitar) were at the wedding of Peter’s brother Jeff,” the members recall. Jeff played in Cold Shoulder, Peter in Cohezion, and Liam in Die Hexe. Originally, Liam began writing new material with Brendan from Strange Limbs, but the project was abandoned. Liam and Peter continued as a duo, eventually recruiting Turner (bass), a longtime friend of Liam’s, and Josh (drums). Josh joined by pure coincidence - his friend was shopping at Peter’s workplace when a coworker casually asked if he knew any available drummers for Peter’s new project.

Their Toronto-rooted sound came to life through the production, mixing, and mastering of Davis Maxwell, and the album cover features artwork by Evan Odette.
